Six Kubernetes Pain Points and How Cloud Can Solve Them
Six Kubernetes Pain Points and How Cloud Can Solve Them

With more than 30 Kubernetes solutions in the marketplace, it's tempting to think Kubernetes and the vendor ecosystem has solved the problem of operationalizing containers at scale or of automatically managing the elasticity of the underlying infrastructure that these solutions need to be truly scalable. Far from it. There are at least six major pain points that companies experience when they try to deploy and run Kubernetes in their complex environments. In this presentation, the speaker will detail these pain points and explain how cloud can address them.

IoT Data: From the Edge to the Cloud and Back
IoT Data: From the Edge to the Cloud and Back

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next-gen applications and how to address the challenges of building applications that harness all data types and sources.

Graph Databases and Machine Learning: Finding a Happy Marriage
Graph Databases and Machine Learning: Finding a Happy Marriage

Machine learning provides predictive models which a business can apply in countless ways to better understand its customers and operations.

Since machine learning was first developed with flat, tabular data in mind, it is still not widely understood: when does it make sense to use graph databases and machine learning in combination?

This talk tackles the question from two ends: classifying predictive analytics methods and assessing graph database attributes. It also examines the ongoing lifecycle for machine learning in production.  From this analysis it builds a framework for seeing where machine learning on a graph can be advantageous.'

Addressing Critical Shortcomings of ETL Tools for Better Data Analytics
Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.

Extract, transform and load (ETL) tools like AWC Glue bring much needed functionality. This tool enables new approaches to pulling, processing and pushing data from source to target, and introduces concepts such as performing data transformation tasks using SparkSQL scripts in Apache spark environment. However, there are shortcomings with AWS Glue, leading to a number of challenges and questions:

Where are the necessary coding techniques when it comes to dealing with specific data types and many such technical aspects of traditional ETL tools?

How can data analysts rely on the Glue-Dynamic frame concept for some of the key design aspects when it comes to incremental loads design and data conversion process?

How can accurate reporting be achieved when the data processing step truncates decimals points, creating huge data discrepancies?

At Infostretch, we believe these challenges can be handled by utilizing specific database level functions. In this session, we will showcase real-life experience with such deal-breaking scenarios, and demonstrate how to mitigate these issues without jeopardizing reporting accuracy, compromising on quality, or endlessly waiting for new releases.

Attendees will learn how to overcome the critical shortcomings of the AWS Glue ETL tool to achieve success:

How to use specific database level functions without jeopardizing quality

Address issue of truncating decimals to produce accurate reports

Ensure source system KPIs match up with target system KPIs for complete business insights.

Compute "Ubering" with Ad-hoc Networking to Build Device Cloud
Compute "Ubering" with Ad-hoc Networking to Build Device Cloud

The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands.

Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully been able to harness the excess capacity of privately owned vehicles and turned into a meaningful business. This concept can be step-functioned to harnessing the spare compute capacity of smartphones that can be orchestrated by MEC to provide cloud service at the edge.

I propose "smart ad-hoc networking" approach to build ‘device-cloud' that opens door for new opportunities to monetize. This cooperative networking approach will be augmented with pro-active and predictive security framework.

Deployment on AWS ECS and Fargate Utilizing CICD Pipeline

AWS ECS, like Kubernetes, is a container orchestration solution. It makes us easier to deploy, manage, and scale out container workloads. However, with ECS we are still responsible for the availability, capacity, and maintenance of the underlying infrastructure. AWS Fargate is a technology that we can use with ECS to run containers without having to manage servers or clusters of EC2 instances. With AWS Fargate, we no longer need to provision, configure, and scale clusters of virtual machines to run containers. This removes the need to choose server types, decide when to scale your clusters, or optimize cluster packing.

In this session we will do a live demo of a CICD pipeline which automate the build and deployment of microservice application onto AWS ECS and Fargate. The CICD pipeline will continuous deliver into various environments and various pipeline stages. The demo will utilize only AWS services including AWS CodeCommit, Codebuild, code pipeline, ECR, ECS and Fargate.

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How?
Moderator Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions, brings together a panel of experts to discuss performance management and cost monitoring in a multi-cloud world.

Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It's clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in this new hybrid and dynamic environment.

Enterprise IT leaders tasked with management of apps, data and business processes amid this new level of complexity have been used to being able to gain logs- and agents-based data sets and generate analysis on IT assets that they control, that they own, and that they can impose their will over.

Yet, seemingly overnight, the vast majority of companies have ceded control of their public cloud assets to the cloud providers. The still have management insights into their on-premises, systems, but in many ways, the ability to manage in a fully hybrid fashion has been overtaken by the actual hybrid deployments models.

The cart is in front of the horse. IT leaders have hybrid computing - but not commensurate hybrid management and monitoring. They can't assure security nor compliance. They can not determine true and comparative costs - never mind optimize for efficiency across the hybrid IT and multi-cloud spectrum.

Just like server virtualization a decade ago proved a great idea that was soon limited by sprawl and an inability to measure, manage and optimize Virtual Machines - hybrid cloud and multi-cloud deployments run the risk of losing the performance and productivity race if the total hybrid and multicloud management equation is not solved.

The panel will examine these challenges and explore new ways that true multi-cloud management and monitoring will evolve. Automation - in synergy with big data analytics - is the key to effective and on-going multi-cloud management and optimization. Great strides are being made in big data analysis of such vast data sets as IT infrastructure logs from a variety of sources - including from across a hybrid IT continuum.

Many IT industry analysts are now envisioning how automated artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled "bots" leveraging IT systems and cloud performance data can begin deliver more value to IT operations management and optimization. Whether you call it BotOps or AIOps, the idea is the same: The rapid, concurrent use of multiple data sources, data collection methods, and real-time top-line analytical technologies to make IT operations work the best at the least cost.

Similar in concept to self-driving cars, wouldn't you like to see self-driving IT operations? It may, in fact, be the only way to manage the complexity and speed of true multi-cloud management and costs optimization.

Enterprise IoT Has Created Smart Cities and a New Economy
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as if they were Silicon Valley startups.

As a result, many firms employ new business models that place enormous importance on software-based innovations. They require not only skilled occupations, such as data analysts and DevOps professionals, with more technical skills, but also middle-level employees with more software and computing acumen. Both large and small firms operate differently.

These are the "green shoots" of a new economy. It is characterized by rapid software innovation, swift changes in infrastructure - not only virtualized data and compute resources, but also virtualized networks - and new analytic and predictive capabilities.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Robert Cohen, an economist and senior fellow at the Economic Strategy Institute, will discuss how after this shift, the economy will require:

Technical acumen built in schools, through in-house training, or better university programs.
Industries that no longer bend metal or provide retail or sales opportunities. They will exploit continuous innovations in software and computing to offer autonomous capabilities and innovative connections to customers.
The Internet of Things will serve as the handmaiden for dramatic economic change.

Docker to Helm: Dealing with Container Sprawl
Needless to say you'll need a laptop! Any OS is fine (Mac is recommended and that's the only machine we've tested on) but make sure the following prerequisites are met prior to the session:

Prerequisite 1: Git is installed

Prerequisite 2: A valid Azure subscription is available. You can get a trial account from https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/free/.

Prerequisite 3: The az CLI from https://github.com/Azure/azure-cli is installed on the laptop OR you can use the cloud shell as outlined in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cloud-shell/overview

Prerequisite 4: Limits in Azure are set low. File support tickets to get the limits bumped up for your subscriptions. We will need cores (60-100 recommended) to be spun up in West UK which supports some of the configurations.

Prerequisite 5: A familiarity with the Azure portal and the CLI (attended a 1-day Azure course for instance).

Prerequisite 6: A Docker Hub account from https://hub.docker.com/. This is optional if you're OK skipping portions of a few exercises.

Prerequisite 7: The labs from https://github.com/ragsns/dockeronazure.git installed locally either via a git clone command or by downloading a zip file from the remote repository.

The Reason Enterprises are Failing at DevOps: To Predict the Future, Look to the Past
Enterprises are universally struggling to understand where the new tools and methodologies of DevOps fit into their organizations, and are universally making the same mistakes. These mistakes are not unavoidable, and in fact, avoiding them gifts an organization with sustained competitive advantage, just like it did for Japanese Manufacturing Post WWII.

The fundamental mistake is believing that DevOps fits on top of the legacy management of people and things, the way we've always done things since the industrial revolution, and it does not.  DevOps is not an addition but a replacement:  A creeping revolution in the principles of how we run IT.     When you look at the History of American Manufacturing and the costly cycles of failure that preceded adaptation to modern practices, you see the present and the future of global IT. Those that could adapt survived. Those that could not died.

Learning history's lessons is an imperative for survival in a world where the most important skill is adapting to continually accelerating change.  In this session we'll cover the specific actions necessary to adopt the new philosophy and transform into next generation organizations instead of joining former giants like Blockbuster and Toys-R-Us in history's dustbin of cautionary tales.

You Can't Get the Rainbow Without the Cloud
Everyone wants the rainbow - reduced IT costs, scalability, continuity, flexibility, manageability, and innovation. But in order to get to that collaboration rainbow, you need the cloud! In this presentation, we'll cover three areas:

First - the rainbow of benefits from cloud collaboration. There are many different reasons why more and more companies and institutions are moving to the cloud.  Benefits include: cost savings (reducing on-prem infrastructure, reducing data center foot print, reducing IT support costs), enabling growth (ensuring a highly available, highly scalable infrastructure), increasing employee access & engagement (by having collaboration tools that are usable and available globally regardless of location there will be an increased connectedness amongst teams and individuals that will help increase both efficiency and productivity.)

Second - clearing away the storm clouds of concern around privacy, security, and compliance. While a move to the cloud may help provide some of the benefits described, it's important to understand what some of the key concerns and things to consider when moving to the cloud.  Those three areas are privacy (how to ensure your content and user data is protected and ensure users are only able to view the content to which they are entitled), security (how to prevent malicious attacks and other intrusions aimed to compromise the system or steal data), and compliance (making sure you adhere to the IT regulations set forth by your industry or local government).

Third - the simple steps for getting to the cloud - starting with choosing a buying model that bridges the path, understanding gateway technologies, and creating user experiences that accelerate the shift. We will walk through a two lane road map that shows both the technical path and the business strategy path.  For the technical path we will discuss what needs to be in place architecturally to move to the cloud, what role hybrid integrations that bridge on-prem with the cloud can play, and what is the full breadth of collaboration capabilities available in the cloud. For the business strategy path, we will discuss how to prepare your users and ensure that areas such as adoption and absorption of these capabilities are being addressed.

Digital Transformation: Preparing Cloud & IoT Security for the Age of Artificial Intelligence
As automation and artificial intelligence (AI) power solution development and delivery, many businesses need to build backend cloud capabilities. Well-poised organizations, marketing smart devices with AI and BlockChain capabilities prepare to refine compliance and regulatory capabilities in 2018. Volumes of health, financial, technical and privacy data, along with tightening compliance requirements by FTC, CUI/DFARS, EU-GDPR and the underlying National Cybersecurity Framework suggest the need for a ground-up re-thinking of security strategies and compliance actions. This session offers actionable advice based on case studies to demonstrate the impact of security and privacy attributes for the cloud-backed IoT and AI ecosystem.

Managing the Evolving Cloud with Composable Infrastructure
The deluge of IoT sensor data collected from connected devices and the powerful AI required to make that data actionable are giving rise to a hybrid ecosystem in which cloud, on-prem and edge processes become interweaved. Attendees will learn how emerging composable infrastructure solutions deliver the adaptive architecture needed to manage this new data reality. Machine learning algorithms can better anticipate data storms and automate resources to support surges, including fully scalable GPU-centric compute for the most data-intensive applications. Hyperconverged systems already in place can be revitalized with vendor-agnostic, PCIe-deployed, disaggregated approach to composable, maximizing the value of previous investments.

Artificial Intelligence: The Good, the Bad, and the Practical
Artificial intelligence, machine learning, neural networks. We're in the midst of a wave of excitement around AI such as hasn't been seen for a few decades. But those previous periods of inflated expectations led to troughs of disappointment. This time is (mostly) different.

Applications of AI such as predictive analytics are already decreasing costs and improving reliability of industrial machinery. Pattern recognition can equal or exceed the ability of human experts in some domains. It's developing into an increasingly commercially important technology area. (Although it's also easy to look at wins in specific domains and generalize to an overly-optimistic view of AI writ large.)

In this session, Red Hat Technology Evangelist for Emerging Technology Gordon Haff will examine the AI landscape and identify those domains and approaches that have seen genuine advance and why. He'll also discuss some of the specific ways in which both organizations and individuals are getting up to speed with AI today.

Can a Freelancer Cost $500 an Hour?
A traditional way of software development efforts reimbursing is pay by the hour, which in case of remote programmers means $20-50 per hour, depening on the territory and the complexity of tech stack. However, what is the real amount of work programmers are delivering for that money? How many features and bug fixes they are usually capable of closing in a single working hour? Those metrics are rarely being calculated. In the presentation I will demonstrate the numbers obtained from over 30 projects completely in the last four years, all remotely. The numbers will show that the real amount of money we spend on coding is much higher than we expect.

Cloud-Native: A New Ecosystem for Putting Containers into Production
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications.

Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addresses many of the challenges faced by developers and operators as monolithic applications transition towards a distributed microservice architecture. A tracing tool like Jaeger analyzes what's happening as a transaction moves through a distributed system. Monitoring software like Prometheus captures time-series events for real-time alerting and other uses. Grafeas and Kritis provide security policy attestation and enforcement. And there are many more.

In short, there's an entire new cloud-native ecosystem growing up around containers. Come to this talk by Red Hat technology evangelist Gordon Haff and learn all about it.

The complexity of managing and delivering the high level of reliability expected of web-based, cloud hosted systems today, and the expectation of Continuous Delivery of new features has led to the evolution of a totally new field of Service Reliability Engineering catered for such systems.
Google, who has been a pioneer in this field, calls it Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). While it would be more aptly named Service Reliability Engineering, the name has caught on. The seminal work documenting Google approach and practices is in the book by Google by the same name (commonly referred to as the ‘SRE book'), and has become the defacto standard on how to adopt SRE in an organization. This session will cover adopting SRE as a practice in organizations also adopting DevOps; address the challenges to adopting SRE faced by large traditional enterprises, and how to overcome them.

Are You Thinking About Big Data When Doing IoT? - You Should Be
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the massive amount of information associated with these devices. Ed presented sought out sessions at CloudEXPO Silicon Valley 2017 and CloudEXPO New York 2017. He is a regular contributor to Cloud Computing Journal.

Making Cellular Communications Work for IoT
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data.

Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. By using cell IoT modules, telecom service providers, mobile network operators can more quickly and easily develop and deploy IoT that use cell communications.

Making AI Non-Disruptive to Create Significantly Better Business Decisions
Disruption, Innovation, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Leadership and Management hear these words all day every day... lofty goals but how do we make it real? Add to that, that simply put, people don't like change. But what if we could implement and utilize these enterprise tools in a fast and "Non-Disruptive" way, enabling us to glean insights about our business, identify and reduce exposure, risk and liability, and secure business continuity?

According to a report from IBM Marketing Cloud, "10 Key Marketing Trends", 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last 24 months (since that was published in 2107, some are now suggesting that due to the accelerated velocity of data creation, that figure is actually 6 months); perhaps more importantly, it is estimated that 90% of that data is presumed to be unstructured data. This means that unstructured data makes up approximately 80% of the data available to business for decision support, yet businesses are omitting it from their repertoire. In short, businesses today are making mission critical business decisions based on only 20% of their available data; utilizing structured data is necessary, but by itself, insufficient.

Just imagine if there was a way to combine unstructured data with behavioral and structured data, thereby making 100% of enterprise data available to leaders and managers for mission-critical decision support in real time - and do it in a non-disruptive way? Now there is...

Serverless Architecture: Separating Logic From Plumbing and Paving the Way to Decentralized Execution
Technological progress can be expressed as layers of abstraction - higher layers are built on top of lower layers treating them as abstract black boxes with known interfaces. A serverless approach represents an inflection point that entirely separates the runtime layer from the underlying execution infrastructure. This paves a way for computations where the ultimate execution environment is not known in advance.

The Digital Customer Journey in Fintech and Beyond
Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on organizations of all sizes and in every line of business. Fintech is a constant battleground for this technology expanding trend and the lessons learned here can be applied anywhere. Digital transformation isn't going to go away and the need for greater understanding and skills around managing, guiding, and understanding the greater landscape of change is required for effective transformations.

This session will explore the core challenges that face every organization looking to transform and embrace digital experiences for their customers. From the shift in culture, to the need for new tech, to the technical debt load that will be incurred, we will cover all of them. Through the talk we will see ways in which others have mitigated and addressed them to facilitate complex and complete digital transformation, and ways in which they have failed and why. Participants will leave with a better vision for what constitutes digital transformation and how to embrace and deliver on this need in their own organizations. No technical skills are required, but a general technical understanding is assumed for participants.

Dev How You Want. Run Where You Want: Application Portability with Kubernetes

Containers and Kubernetes allow for code portability across on-premise VMs, bare metal, or multiple cloud provider environments. Yet, despite this portability promise, developers may include configuration and application definitions that constrain or even eliminate application portability. In this session we'll describe best practices for "configuration as code" in a Kubernetes environment. We will demonstrate how a properly constructed containerized app can be deployed to both Amazon and Azure using the Kublr platform, and how Kubernetes objects, such as persistent volumes, ingress rules, and services, can be used to abstract from the infrastructure.

Machine Data is Everywhere! Use it for Testing!
When applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. Learn the steps so your team's apps not only function but also can be monitored and understood from their machine data when running in production.

Accelerating CI/CD with Data Management On Premise and Cloud
Updating DevOps to the latest production data slows down your development cycle. Probably it is due to slow, inefficient conventional data management practices to copy data between different developer and test environment. This problem doesn't scale as teams are adopting faster software release cycles.

In this session, Dhiraj Sehgal in Product and Solution at Delphix, will talk about DevOps and cloud-focused strategies to update hundreds of developer and test copies with updates from a master database in minutes, saving hours or even days in each development cycle. He will also discuss how new practices in DataOps to manage data across multiple sources is making their life easier and helps  becoming invisible to developers for data provisioning.

Continuous Testing versus Test Automation: What’s the Difference?
The past few years have brought a sea change in the way applications are architected, developed, and consumed—increasing both the complexity of testing and the business impact of software failures.

How can software testing professionals keep pace with modern application delivery, given the trends that impact both architectures (cloud, microservices, and APIs) and processes (DevOps, agile, and continuous delivery)? This is where continuous testing comes in.

Attend this session to discover why and how continuous testing is different from traditional test automation.

You will learn:

The three main differences between continuous testing and test automation
Where traditional test automation falls short in modern development and delivery processes

DevSecOps: The Open Source Way
DevOps purists may chafe at the DevSecOps term given that security and other important practices are supposed to already be an integral part of routine DevOps workflows. But the reality is that security often gets more lip service than thoughtful and systematic integration into open source software sourcing, development pipelines, and operations processes--in spite of an increasing number of threats.

The extensive use of modular open source software from third-parties, distributed development teams, and rapid iterative releases require a commitment to security and the adoption of security approaches that are continuous, adaptive, and heavily automated.

In this session, Red Hat Technology Evangelist Gordon Haff look at successful practices that distributed and diverse teams use to iterate rapidly.  While still reacting quickly to threats and minimizing business risk. I'll discuss how a container platform can serve as the foundation for DevSecOps in your organization. I'll also consider the risk management associated with integrating components from a variety of sources--a consideration that open source software has had to deal with since the beginning. Finally, I'll show ways by which automation and repeatable trusted delivery of code can be built directly into a DevOps pipeline.

Practical IoT Development for Anyone Using Pi and Python (1/3)
Limited Capacity seats available

This hands-on workshop is limited to 20 delegates, first come-first served - please note that it is a 3-hour session spread across 3 regular session blocks. When you sign up, sign up for all 3 blocks!

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the horizon, that we already run the risk as enablers and supporters of not being able to effectively understand and develop these complex and multi-disciplined solutions on our own. That understanding, of the basics of circuits, sensors, and how those things work together and with software is the key to being able to understand, engineer, and support IoT solutions in your own environment.

In this workshop, participants will get hands-on guidance in building and coding their own prototype IoT project from scratch. Participants will walk away from this session with an understanding of the fundamental requirements for assembling a variety of circuits, sensors, platforms, and essential Python programming skills that will allow them to rapidly prototype IoT projects for their own scenarios. We will also talk about how to make the transition from prototype to production and the increased capabilities and requirements that transition provides. IoT is a critical technology across so many industries, that knowing these fundamentals will make you a better prepared and more effective IoT practitioner. No prior experience in development or hardware is required, and no hardware is needed; it will be provided for participants. Participants need to bring their own laptop for the hand's on portion of the workshop.

T is the Shape of Transformation Talent
The digital transformation is real! To adapt, IT professionals need to transform their own skillset to become more multi-dimensional by gaining both depth and breadth of a wide variety of knowledge and competencies. Historically, while IT has been built on a foundation of specialty (or “I” shaped) silos, the DevOps principle of “shifting left” is opening up opportunities for developers, operational staff, security and others to grow their skills portfolio, advance their careers and become “T”-shaped.

This session will explore emerging practices, technologies and related competencies that organizations and individuals will need in order to keep and gain competitive advantage across the value stream. From leadership and cultural to technical knowledge to soft skills, the presentation will help attendees identify a learning path that will help them evolve from an I-shaped specialist to a highly demanded multi-competent T-shaped professional.

Practical IoT Development for Anyone Using Pi and Python (3/3)

Cloud computing is changing strategies and enabling innovation at every turn. Cloud is changing IT economics. Cloud is blurring the lines and breaking down traditional silos. Cloud is blending roles and redefining boundaries. Regardless of which industry we are in, or the position we hold, cloud computing is changing everything; how we work, how we play, and how we communicate.

Cloud Computing Is a Transformation, Not a Migration

This "Power Panel" will discuss Cloud Transformation and why it's so taxing professionally, mentally and emotionally. It will explain why cloud transformations require a change in mindset and how you should use a continuous stream of relevant data to gain the needed insights. These experts will also answer your questions on how to continuously sense the information technology marketplace to better align your professional transformation to your organization's goals.

DevOps "Power Panel" with Andi Mann: Putting the ‘Ops’ back in ‘DevOps’
The Resurgence of Ops and their Role in DevOps

DevOps has long focused on reinventing the SDLC (e.g. with CI/CD, ARA, pipeline automation etc.), while reinvention of IT Ops has lagged. However, new approaches like Site Reliability Engineering, Observability, Containerization, Operations Analytics, and ML/AI are driving a resurgence of IT Ops. In this session our expert panel will focus on how these new ideas are [putting the Ops back in DevOps or bringing modern IT Ops to DevOps].

The I/O of DevOps
For far too long technology teams have lived in siloes. Not only physical siloes, but cultural siloes pushed by competing objectives. This includes informational siloes where business users require one set of data and tech teams require different data. DevOps intends to bridge these gaps to make tech driven operations more aligned and efficient.

Cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, and Nano Crimes: A looming Dark Cloud?
Cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, and Nano Crimes: A looming Dark Cloud?
  • It cannot be overseen or regulated by any one administrator, like a government or bank.
  • Currently, there is no government regulation on them which also means there is no government safeguards over them.
  • Although many are looking at Bitcoin to put money into, it would be wise to proceed with caution.
  • Regular central banks are watching it and deciding whether or not to make them illegal (Criminalize them) and therefore make them worthless and eliminate them as competition.
  • ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) are something most have no idea as to what it means and how you utilize it.
  • Where is the “Stamp of Approval” or “Stamp of Legitimacy” on some of these Bitcoin websites (how do you know you are not dealing with a scammer?)
There is malware already on the Internet including cryptojacking malware.

Got Cloud: The Democratization of Analytics
A Scenarios approach will present examples that illustrate the democratization of technology consumption, specifically focused on analytics.    Cloud Computing is a catalytic agent driving ease of consumption, with OpEx based pricing, with low capitalization costs.   These factors of ease of consumption and more of a real-time experience has also changed the behavior of how business leverages technology with data-driven decisions.

Outline:
  1. Financial analytic compute that used to take a day, now takes a few minutes at 10x lower TCO due to the ability to leverage virtualization technology by VMWare.
  2. Exelon, based in Chicago leverages a large Cloud provider to compare native RISC-based computing of their enterprise financial analytics batch runs by their Finance Department to provide for a more real-time response.   Instead of taking 24 hours for batch processes to be completed over-night, these batch runs now take a few minutes.
  3. Acme Trading Company leverages data analytics to discover key trading strategies based on a handful of simple scenarios and typical outcomes based on Market data compared in tandem with trade execution.   This historical data had taken days to perform and now takes a few minutes empowering trading staff to make changes in their trading behavior faster when encountering Market volatility.
  4. Beer Analytics:  A distributor or bar-owner has the capability to capture analytics based on by installing flowmeters at the bar’sline at the Point of Consumption (POC). In this way, so each poured drink, brand of beer poured brand can be measured in real time.

KEY TAKEAWAY 1: Data-driven business decisions
KEY TAKEAWAY 2: A financial approach to evaluating technology scenarios
KEY TAKEAWAY 3: Cloud-based data analytics
