To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How?

Moderator Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions, brings together a panel of experts to discuss performance management and cost monitoring in a multi-cloud world.

Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments. It's clear that traditional IT monitoring and management approaches, designed after all for on-premises data centers, are falling short in this new hybrid and dynamic environment.

Enterprise IT leaders tasked with management of apps, data and business processes amid this new level of complexity have been used to being able to gain logs- and agents-based data sets and generate analysis on IT assets that they control, that they own, and that they can impose their will over.

Yet, seemingly overnight, the vast majority of companies have ceded control of their public cloud assets to the cloud providers. The still have management insights into their on-premises, systems, but in many ways, the ability to manage in a fully hybrid fashion has been overtaken by the actual hybrid deployments models.

The cart is in front of the horse. IT leaders have hybrid computing - but not commensurate hybrid management and monitoring. They can't assure security nor compliance. They can not determine true and comparative costs - never mind optimize for efficiency across the hybrid IT and multi-cloud spectrum.

Just like server virtualization a decade ago proved a great idea that was soon limited by sprawl and an inability to measure, manage and optimize Virtual Machines - hybrid cloud and multi-cloud deployments run the risk of losing the performance and productivity race if the total hybrid and multicloud management equation is not solved.

The panel will examine these challenges and explore new ways that true multi-cloud management and monitoring will evolve. Automation - in synergy with big data analytics - is the key to effective and on-going multi-cloud management and optimization. Great strides are being made in big data analysis of such vast data sets as IT infrastructure logs from a variety of sources - including from across a hybrid IT continuum.

Many IT industry analysts are now envisioning how automated artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled "bots" leveraging IT systems and cloud performance data can begin deliver more value to IT operations management and optimization. Whether you call it BotOps or AIOps, the idea is the same: The rapid, concurrent use of multiple data sources, data collection methods, and real-time top-line analytical technologies to make IT operations work the best at the least cost.

Similar in concept to self-driving cars, wouldn't you like to see self-driving IT operations? It may, in fact, be the only way to manage the complexity and speed of true multi-cloud management and costs optimization.
